Prochorus | Spring Of Life Creche

The Spring of Life Edu-Care Centre is located in an informal settlement, Asanda Village in the Strand, where it provides a safe learning environment for children by means of a crèche and aftercare facilities.

The crèche started in 2012 with 15 children (3-6 years old) and 2 teachers in the church building, growing to 60 children (2 to 6 years old) and 3 teachers, occupying 3 buildings (1 classroom and 1 combined classroom/kitchen with a fenced-in ‘grassed’ playground with jungle gym and a dedicated ablution block). JAM International provides the children with a daily meal. The aftercare caters for up to 20 children at this stage, with parent volunteers from the community assisting the teachers.

We are using Prochorus’ own registered education curriculum. We want to ensure that the learning the facility provides gives the children a solid foundation for life-long learning and productive participation in life. Masikhule provides teacher training and supports and mentors the crèche from an educational perspective. A highlight of our year is our graduation ceremony. Typically, 20 students graduate to Grade R every year.

Our current needs:

  • Training of staff
  • Volunteers for maintenance work
  • Additional classroom space
  • Vegetable garden
  • Security gate for the kitchen door
  • A gate motor for the sliding entrance gate
  • 60 small mattresses for kids’ nap-time
  • A solar geyser
