Prochorus | Development through Cycling

The Development through Cycling project uses whole-life coaching together with sports coaching to mentor, motivate and develop its beneficiaries holistically.

The funds raised during this campaign will go towards the teams’ new cycling kit needed for our representation at races and other public events. One set, consisting of a jersey, shorts, socks and gloves works out to about R 4000. Any excess funds will go towards sports nutrition, transport and bicycle maintenance. We can currently accommodate 25 children on the project. The children take great pride in wearing their special kit to cycling events and goes a very long way in building their confidence and hope.

Jonkershoek is famous for spectacular views of mountains, amazing mountain bike tracks and beautiful wine farms. About 500 impoverished people are living in the valley of Jonkershoek. More than a third of these consist of children between eight and eighteen years of age. The main challenges in the community consist of teenage pregnancy, children dropping out of school, unemployment, lack of hope and ambition, alcohol and drug abuse, as well as a lack of activities to stimulate the children after school and during holidays. Dysfunctional parenting and a lack of activities are probably the main causes of why youth get involved in gangsterism and wrong behaviour patterns. After some research into the community’s needs and reflecting on our past experience, we are running the following strategic projects at Prochorus Jonkershoek aimed towards youth education and skills development:

  • Cycling Whole Life Coaching project
  • Mentoring group for boys and girls
