Prochorus | Creche Support Programme

Our Early Childhood Development programme offers vulnerable children a quality safe learning environment for a well-balanced foundational education.

In 2005, a thorough needs analysis was conducted to determine the unattended immediate needs of the people of Kayamandi. There were many NGOs working in Kayamandi, and it was important to prioritise those areas of need that were not met by the current projects.

A significant number of shack and home crèches were discovered, where babies and children spent their days sitting in small rooms with no form of educational or developmental activities offered. These children’s parents work very long hours to feed and clothe their families, so the crèche is the only place where children can receive the much-needed stimulation for their most important formative years.

Prochorus then started a crèche support project where women in Kayamandi who had a love for children and wanted to generate their own income by starting a crèche at their house and backyard were identified and nurtured. Donors were sourced to donate infrastructure, tables, chairs and materials. All the principals and teachers were provided with Early Childhood Development training, and assistance was offered with registering each ECD centre at the Department of Social Development. After this process, the business was theirs and monitoring was undertaken on a regular basis to ensure that the centres ran smoothly and that the ECD curriculum was implemented as planned. Prochorus started approximately 35 of these centres in Kayamandi, of which 27 are still in operation. Today, the Kayamandi Early Childhood Development Forum effectively facilitates the needs of the ECD community and Prochorus can just assist from the side. We don’t focus on providing buildings and physical creche resources but rather the training on the Prochorus ECD Curriculum, which upon completion, unregistered creches can use to register their creche to receive formal assistance from the government. Today more than 1,000 children are receiving quality early childhood education through the foundations established by Prochorus through the Kayamandi crèche support project.
